 What are Headaches?

Most people underestimate the complexity of headaches. Different types can have their own set of symptoms, occur for various reasons, and require other treatments. A headache is characterized by pain in any part of the head. Headaches can occur on one or both sides of the head, be localized, radiate across the head from a single point, or have a vice-like quality. A headache can be characterized by sharp pain, a throbbing sensation, or a dull ache. Headaches can come on gradually or suddenly, and they can last anywhere from an hour to several days.

Causes of Headaches

Pain from headaches is caused by signals interacting between the brain, blood vessels, tissues and surrounding nerves. An unknown mechanism activates specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels during headaches. These nerves communicate pain to the brain.

Illness

Infections, colds, and fevers are examples of this. Headaches are also common with conditions such as sinusitis (sinus inflammation), a throat infection, or an ear infection. Headaches can be caused by a blow to the head or, in rare cases, be a sign of a more serious medical problem.

Stress

Emotional stress and depression, alcohol use, skipping meals, sleeping patterns changes, taking conflicting medication, and long held postures can also cause neck and back strain.

Surroundings or Environment

Your surroundings include secondhand tobacco smoke, strong odors from household chemicals or perfumes, allergens, and specific foods. Other potential triggers include stress, pollution, noise, lighting, and weather changes.

Genetics

Headaches, particularly migraine, can be genetically predisposed. The majority of children and teenagers (90 percent) who suffer from migraines have other family members who suffer from them as well. When both parents have a history of migraines, their child has a 70% chance of having them. If only one parent has a history of these headaches, the risk is reduced to 25% -50%.

Doctors aren't sure what causes migraines. According to one theory, migraines are caused by a problem with the electric charge passing through nerve cells.

Types of Headache

Headaches can have many different causes. The type of headache you have is important in understanding your diagnosis, treatment options, and prevention strategies, including massaging options.

Tension

The most common type of headache is a tension headache. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache experienced by adults and adolescents. They cause mild to moderate pain and appear and disappear over time, and they usually do not have any other symptoms. Tension headache pain tends to be:

  • Consistent but not throbbing.

  • Mild to medium.

  • Each side of the head (bilateral).

  • Receptive to over-the-counter medication.

  • Worse during everyday activities (such as bending over, looking up or down).

Migraine

Migraines are frequently described as pounding, throbbing pain. They can last from a few hours to 3 days and occur one to four times per month. People experience other symptoms in addition to pain, such as sensitivity to light, noise, or smells; nausea or vomiting; loss of appetite; and upset stomach or belly pain. It can cause a child to appear pale, feel dizzy, have blurry vision, have a fever, and upset stomach. A small percentage of children's migraines include digestive symptoms such as vomiting, which occur about once a month.

Migraines are the second most common primary headache type. Migraines can cause the following symptoms:

  • Pain ranging from moderate to severe.

  • Vomiting or nausea.

  • Pain that is pounding or throbbing.

  • Pain that lasts between four hours and three days.

  • Light, noise, or odor sensitivity.

  • Abdominal pain or upset stomach.

Cluster

The most severe type of primary headache is a cluster headache. Cluster headaches occur in clusters, usually in the spring or Autumn. They happen one to eight times per day for two to three months during a cluster period. The headaches may go away (into remission) for months or years, only to reappear later. A cluster headache causes the following symptoms:

  • The sensation is intense, with a burning or stabbing sensation.

  • Without changing sides, behind one of your eyes or in the eye region.

  • Throbbing or continuous.

New Daily Persistent (NDPH)

New daily persistent headaches (NDPH) appear out of nowhere and last for three months. They usually occur in people who did not previously suffer from frequent headaches. The following are the symptoms of NDPH:

  • Constant and unwavering in their efforts.

  • Both sides of the head are affected.

  • Medication has had no effect.

Sinus

Sinus headaches are caused by a sinus infection, which causes sinus congestion and inflammation (open passageways behind the cheeks and forehead). People, including healthcare providers, frequently confuse migraines with sinus headaches. Sinus headache symptoms include:

  • Bad taste in the mouth.

  • Deep, ongoing pain in your cheekbones and brow.

  • Swelling of the face.

  • Ears have a fullness sensation.

  • Fever.

  • Pain that worsens when you move your head quickly or strain.

  • Discharge of mucus (snot).

Headaches Among Children

By the time they reach high school, most kids have had headaches. Tension headaches and migraines affect about 20% of them regularly. Children's headache triggers, like adults', include:

  • Certain foods cause headaches in the individual.

  • Sleep patterns have shifted.

  • Environmental aspects

  • Stress.

How Can Massages Help?

Headache massage is one of the most effective ways to relieve and lessen the pain of a headache. Using techniques that focus on the neck, shoulders, scalp and jaw massage helps prevent migraines from occurring in the first place by taking pressure off your head. This can help alleviate tension and anxiety, providing stress relief.

Pain and Pressure

LI-4, also known as Hegu, is a pressure point located between your thumb and index finger base. To relieve pain and headaches, apply acupressure to this point.

Deep Tissue Massage

This is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal issues such as strains and sports injuries. It entails applying sustained pressure to the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues with slow, deep strokes. If the therapist uses too much pressure during this massage, it can result in sore muscles, muscle bruising, and increased blood circulation, which can cause a headache. We recommend feeding back to the therapist if it is unbearable pressure, though we should be able to read this through involuntary contractions.
